Construction of the original Church of St. Francis began in 1549 with completion in 1581. Extreme snowfall in the region led to its collapse by 1612. Construction of the current church began between 1743 and 1744. The basic structure was completed in 1753. The carving of the façade with its mixture of Catholic and indigenous symbols was not finished until 1790. The bell tower was built starting in 1885. The church was declared a minor basilica in 1948. La Paz (elev.3,240m/11,942ft) was founded in the Andes by the Spaniards in 1548 in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River.
